There are generally 2 F connectors on the rear of your cable box that you should be concerned with when connecting the incoming and outgoing coax lines to and from your cable box. If there are more than 1 F connector on your cable box, which is generally the case with some of our cable boxes then you will only need to be concerned with 2 of them. The connectors that you should mainly pay explicit attention too are normally labeled: Input and/or Cable In for the input coax cable line. For the output coax cable line you should use To TV and/or Output. The images show an example of the Scientific Atlanta and Jerrold cable box, but this solution can be universally applied to any cable box that we sell. What are test chips / test chip or test boards / nex boards or quickboards? - Test Chips
A  "test chip" is an electronic device, usually an electronically programmable read only memory device (EPROM), which has been reprogrammed to allow the descrambler/converter unit was designed to be operated in "test mode." The "test chip" EPROM usually replaces an existing EPROM on the descrambler/converter unit. "Test boards" are essentially the same thing, except that the EPROM comes installed on a small printed circuit board that will permit installation without replacing the existing EPROM. When in "test mode," the descrambler/converter is usually capable of descrambling all cable system programming, or at least all the cable channels that have been specifically mapped into the memory of the "test chip." You can\'t legally install a test chip into a descrambler/converter unit that is owned by your cable system because you can\'t legally modify your cable system\'s equipment. Most of the time, the installation of these devices requires unsoldering the existing EPROM, re-soldering in the "test chip" EPROM, or cutting traces and adding jumpers to the motherboard of the converter/descrambler unit. To be operated legally, a "test chip" would have to be installed on equipment you own, and would have to be mapped or programmed in such a way that only authorized programming was received. -

What is the difference between filtering and scrambling? - Cable Boxes, Descramblers, Decoder, Set Top Boxes
Most cable companies scramble all premium channels. (Premium channels refer to regular movie channels like HBO, SHOWTIME, etc and pay-per-view). Some cable companies, usually older systems, will filter some movie channels. Filtering and scrambling are totally different methods and one has absolutely nothing to do with the other. Please note: Pay-per-view channels must be scrambled. Only regular movie channels (like HBO) can be filtered. A descrambler will allow full viewing of all scramble channels (not filtered). A descrambler descrambles a scrambled signal. When filtering is used, the signal is not scrambled - it is being filtered. Which means a device is inserted into your incoming coaxial cable line to delimit or remove parts or all information modulated on to your incoming coaxial cable line. Filters generally need to be removed by upgrading your package with your service provider. The service provider will normally use a tool like this (CATV Security Sleeve Tool) to remove the filter and permit the reception of such filtered channels. -

Generally connecting the cable box to your TV, VCR, PVR, DVR, etc is a cinch. However, you will have to note that if you ordered an upgraded cable box that the cable box has a descrambler kit inside. The kit has what is called firmware programmed into it to help it learn the information coming across your coax incoming line. This line feeds to the back of your cable box via the F connector labeled Input, Cable In, etc. The kit will require some time to learn your systems information prior to the cable box being fully operational. You should plan to allow 48 hours to 2 weeks to elapse before you can fully use your box.Make sure the coax cable lines are properly connected to the rear of the cable box. Read over this FAQ and ensure that you have your cable box connected properly.If you purchased an OEM upgraded cable box then you may have purchased the incorrect model number and/or manufacture to replace your existing cable box. Only the basic channels are received - Cable Boxes, Descramblers, Decoder, Set Top Boxes
The cable box comes shipped to work in STD mode. You most likely need to switch to HRC or IRC mode. You may be on a system where you are only paying for basic service. In this case, you will need to upgrade to EXTENDED BASIC SERVICE.  Remember the cable box must have a signal to descramble the picture. If the cable company is not sending a signal, the descrambler has nothing to descramble. Thus you will not receive a picture. Check to ensure you do not have a filter in your incoming coax line entering your place of testing (home, residence, office, house, etc.). The channel you want to receive may have been moved to the digital channel tier. Check your local channel listing and ensure that the channels you are trying to test (or descramble) are not switch to your providers digital service. Remember analog descramblers will only receive analog channels.The following feature is automatically done on the TriStar MX Nano - there is no need to push BPS or MEM2. If you are not using the TriStar MX Nano then please read the following sentences. Make sure you push the BPS(clearmax/ranger 9000) or MEM2(clearmaster) or Select(matrix) or F2(ranger 5000) button to activate the video descrambler function for that channel. -

In the Owners Manual it says that the volume level on the descrambler must be at least halfway up to process stereo and all the way up (maximum) to process surround sound. However surround sound is not available on all models. The Pioneer cable box code is 034. Here is how you should enter it into the remote: Turn on the Pioneer 6300 cable box Press and hold the CODE SEARCH button until the RED light on the remote is lit. SA 8600 - After programming some channels as oscilating
Hi,I finally installed the test chip today in my SA 8600 and then got some troubble with the audio but it is now solved. After some time after the channel programming I can see that some channels previously scrambled now are oscilatins, some times the image is pretty fine and some times the image appears to be scrambled again... it is oscilating... does anyone have this problem?Thanks a lot!Francisco. Yes, there are a few of solutions to the problem. The "Bullet" as sent from headend causes the cable box to lock-up, and not output a picture. The fix is simple - unplug the power cord. After a few minutes, plug-in the box again and it should reset. At worst, the box may stay dead for up to 24 hours. If this does not work - go to the next fix. The second fix is to install an in-line trap (Cable Filter Bullet Buster) to filter out the actual message or "Bullet" before it can get to the microprocessor of the cable box. This is accomplished by inserting on the cable going to the box, a small F-M trap (or Cable Filter Bullet Buster). This trap is designed to "filter" out the frequency carrying the "Bullet" information. Unfortunately, there are a few side effects. One is that the box will not be updated with time-of-day, special messages and other "housekeeping" instructions. These small traps are popularly referred to as "Bullet Busters" or "Cable Filter Bullet Buster". The third fix is to install a test chip into your universal cable box, OEM cable box, STB (set top box), converter, tuner, or decoder. -

Only regular movie channels can be filtered. Tune to a pay-per view channel on a TV that has no converter connected ( the cable is connected directly to the TV ). The picture should be clear ( no snow ) but will be unstable, wavy-this is a scrambled picture. Any channel that looks like this can be viewed with a converter. If the picture on any premium channel looks any different or has any snow in it, then it is being filtered and will not be viewable with a converter. Filters generally need to be removed by upgrading your package with your service provider. The service provider will normally use a tool like this (CATV Security Sleeve Tool) to remove the filter and permit the reception of such filtered channels. -

As you may have noticed, some HDMI cables sold at other electronic retail stores are twice as thick as a standard DVI (Digital Visual Interface) or HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) cable. This is done to make the HDMI / DVI cable appear to be "more high quality.” Because the cable jacket is much thicker, buyers often think that the signal may be better and spend three times as much money. The fact is, a thicker cable jacket does not produce a better signal. In fact, professional installers shy away from those cables. Those fancy retail store cables are much more difficult to connect, run through walls and conceal behind hanging Plasma and LCD monitors. Many of those retail store cables also have snake-style or soft fancy covers that look really expensive. Those cables do not fare well inside moisture rich wall chases in homes. This style of cable will last the longest and provide the best signal. The last thing you want to do is rip into your walls to replace a corroded cable a few years down the line. -

How to activate (provision) an owed digital cable descrambler - Cable Boxes, Descramblers, Decoder, Set Top Boxes
STEP 1: Call your local provider or Customer Service Representative (CSR) or preferably a Supervisor.Say: “I purchased a refurbished to new Motorola Cable Box and I am requesting for it to be added to your Cable System or have my unit provisioned.”                                        They will require the following 3 pieces of information:1.    The model number. Get this off the bottom of the cable box descrambler. Generally it starts with DCT or DCH or DCP. Look in the knowledge base for tips if you cannot find your model number.2.    The serial number: On the bottom of the cable box. Additional tips to find this are in the knowledge base.3.    The Unit Address: 16 digit number on the back or bottom of the cable box.Please double check these numbers with the actual unit!Be certain that the rep has all three of these when speaking with them on the phone or via email.STEP 2: Have the unit connected directly to a Cable Source, with no splitters or devices and then plug in the power cord. The unit will then download the software automatically, usually in less than an hour. It will shut off by itself when it’s done. If your power it on, it will show channel “0”, this indicates it is ready for activation. It will not change channels or show any channels on your TV at this time, until it is zapped by the cable company. If you ever unplug the power do not plug it back in for at least 1 minute or you risk damaging the unit and voiding the warranty. Keep it plugged in so it’s ready for activation.Then just wait for your provider to call to inform you that the box has been added and to activate it. If you do not hear from them within 2 days, then call them with the serial number.After they activate the box, it will shut off for a few minutes then boot back up. The units take a few minutes to “boot” when you plug the power in and the menu functions won’t work for up to an hour, be patient with these units. TV guide will take a day to fully download.THAT’S IT! That’s all that has to be done, but it has to be followed strictly.Additional info: Sometimes a rep gets a number wrong. Then when they try to activate the box they get no response, this indicates that the cable system is not communicating with the box based on the numbers in their system.
